MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - No. 6 Penn State University suffered a, 5-2, loss to No. 7 Minnesota this evening in the series finale of a Big Ten Conference game from Mariucci Arena.

This marks the first-time all season Penn State has been swept in a weekend series as they fall to 16-6-2 on the year and 5-4-1 in the Big Ten. The Golden Gophers improve to 17-7-2 overall and 8-2-0 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State opened the scoring as sophomore Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) chipped the puck along the half wall in the offensive zone and classmate Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) sent a centering pass tape-to-tape to connect with sophomore Alec Marsh (Bridgewater, N.J.) who slipped the puck past the pad of Gopher net-minder Eric Schierhorn for the 1-0 lead at 8:14 of the first period.
  • Minnesota evened the score taking advantage of a neutral ice turnover as Leon Bristedt skated in uncontested and beat freshman goaltender Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) five-hole for the 1-1 score at 14:51 of the opening period.
  • Senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) then tilted the score back in favor of the Lions just 41 seconds into the middle frame as he was set up by Berger and Sturtz for the 2-1 lead.
  • The Gophers responded again scoring twice in just 1:14 span to grab the 3-2 lead. Brent Gates Jr. received a pass from behind the net and ripped a one-timer from below the left dot at 8:25 before Taylor Cammarata fired home a rebound at 9:39 of the second period.
  • Bristedt then added his second of the night at 16:39 of the second period on the power-play before tipping the hat at 5:43 of the third period for the 5-2 Gopher lead.

GOALTENDING

Jones stopped 23 pucks and falls to 14-4-2 on the season while Eric Schierhorn improves to 17-7-2 overall after collecting 38 saves.

NOTES

  • Sturtz extends his point streak to four games, one shy of his career-high. Goodwin also now has a four-game point streak.
  • Penn State gave up three second period goals for the second straight night.
  • The Nittany Lions are currently in their worst winless drought (0-4-1) since the 2013-14 season.
  • PSU went 0-for-2 with the man-advantage while Minnesota was 1-for-2. Penn State held the 40-28 advantage in shots.
