MADISON, Wis. - Freshman classmates Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) and Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) each potted a pair of goals to help lead No. 10 Penn State to a weekend sweep of No. 17 Wisconsin with a 5-2 victory this evening in Big Ten men's ice hockey action from the Kohl Center.
The Nittany Lions improve to 18-6-2 overall and 7-4-1 in the Big Ten with the victory while the Badgers fall to 15-10-1 on the year and 8-4-0 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State opened the scoring for the second consecutive night as they took advantage of a neutral ice turnover and skating in on an odd-man rush. It was senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) skating up the left slot and dishing a pass to Sucese for the 1-0 lead at 13:33 of the first period.
- Wisconsin evened the score just after a power-play concluded as it was Matt Ustaski (Glenview, Ill.) collecting a rebound off a blocked shot and firing a one-timer past PSU freshman goaltender Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) for the 1-1 tie with just 23 seconds remaining in the opening period.
- The Nittany Lions regained the lead at 7:20 of the second period as Sucese got his second of the game off a rebound for the 2-0 score.
- Smirnov then collected the puck in the offensive zone and skated toward the slot and ripped a rocket that beat Badger net-minder Matt Jurusik high-glove and went off the pipe and in for the 3-1 lead at 10:53 of the middle frame.
- The Badgers cut the deficit in half taking advantage of the power play as Luke Kunin fired a wrister beating Jones blocker side for the 3-2 score at 17:27 of the second period.
- Smirnov then caused a neutral ice turnover and skated in on a breakaway early in the third period beating Jurusik five-hole for the 4-2 lead at 2:53.
- Junior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) would add his second goal in as many nights as he fired home a rebound at 14:37 of the third period for the 5-2 score.
GOALTENDING
Jones improves to 16-4-2 on the year after stopping 27 shots while Jurusik falls to 8-5-0 after a 39 save performance.
NOTES
- Penn State has now won 10 of the last 11 matchups with the Badgers and improve to 12-0-0 when scoring five or more goals.
- Goodwin extends his point streak to six games (4 goals, 4 assists).
- Sucese ties a career-high with three points while collecting his sixth multi-point game of the season, first since November 19 against ASU, and his third multi-goal effort.
- Smirnov registers his tenth multi-point game of the season and first since December 2 against Michigan.
- Penn State held the 44-29 edge in shots, but went 0-for-3 on the power play while Wisconsin was 1-for-5 with the man-advantage.
