UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Lamar Stevens was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after leading Penn State to a pair of back-to-back wins last week, the league announced Monday. Stevens and the Nittany Lions knocked off No. 21 Maryland, 70-64, Tuesday before taking down Illinois, 83-70, on the road Saturday.
The Roman Catholic product averaged 23.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in Penn State's two wins, helping the Lions to six Big Ten wins and their third in the last five games.
Stevens led Penn State in scoring against the Terps, putting up 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting (61.5 percent) while converting on 8-of-12 free throws from the charity stripe. He added seven rebounds, an assist and a team-high three steals. He then followed it up with 23 points, five rebounds and two assists vs. the Illini in the State Farm Center.
Stevens has scored 20 points in three of the last four games and has five 20-point games this season. He is second on the team in scoring and rebounds with 12.3 ppg and 5.7 rpg on the year.
Mike Watkins earned freshman of the week honors twice this season. Michigan State and Iowa join Penn State as programs with multiple rookies recognized this season.
