DENTON, Texas - Sophomore Sabrina Garcia (Etters, Pa.) and junior Briannah Tsang (Vancouver, British Columbia) captured event titles, as the Penn State women's gymnastics team finished fourth in a non-conference quad meet against Sacramento State, Texas Woman's University and Western Michigan inside the Kitty Magee Arena Sunday afternoon.
Host Texas Woman's University finished first with a 196.000, followed by Sacramento State (195.550), Western Michigan (195.375) and Penn State (194.550).
Individually, Garcia took the top spot in the all-around and Tsang won the balance beam title outright. Also, Garcia and Tsang shared the floor exercise title with two other gymnasts.
Competing with five gymnasts on the uneven bars, the Nittany Lions opened the meet with a 47.575. For Penn State on the uneven bars, Garcia led the way, as she tied for third-place with a 9.850.
During the second rotation, the Blue & White tied the No. 10 score in program history on the balance beam with a 49.300. The balance beam featured Tsang tallying a season-best 9.925 for the event title, while senior Nicole Medvitz (Paramus, N.J.) posted a 9.900 to tie for second-place, and Garcia tied a career-best 9.875 to place fifth.
Four Penn Staters finished in the top-10 on the floor exercise, as the Nittany Lions combined for a team score of 49.100. On the floor exercise for PSU, Garcia and Tsang tied for the event title along with two other gymnasts as they all posted a 9.875. Along with Garcia and Tsang on the floor exercise, sophomore Peyton Schuller (Erie, Pa.) placed seventh with a 9.825 and freshman Kristen Politz (Morganville, N.J.) tied for eighth-place with a 9.800.
Garcia and Tsang also paced the Nittany Lions on the vault, as Penn State recorded a 48.575 during the fourth, and final, rotation. The duo of Garcia and Tsang each posted a 9.800 on the apparatus to tie for fourth-place.
In her return to her home state of Texas, sophomore Mason Hosek (Pearland, Texas) tied for seventh on the balance beam (9.825) and the vault (9.775).
The all-around featured Garcia tying a career-best 39.400 for her second career all-around title, while Tsang finished seventh with a 38.950, and Medvitz placed ninth in her first career all-around with a 38.425.
The Nittany Lions return to Rec Hall for their final home meet of the 2017 season against Pittsburgh on Saturday, Feb. 25. The meet is Senior Day and is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
