EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshman Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) collected a pair of goals to help lift No. 11 Penn State past Michigan State, 4-1, this evening in Big Ten men's ice hockey action from Munn Ice Arena.
The Nittany Lions improve to 20-8-2 with the victory and 9-6-1 in the Big Ten securing their second consecutive 20-win season as they are just one-win shy of tying last season's program record of 21. MSU falls to 6-21-3 on the year and 2-12-2 in conference action with the setback.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State opened the scoring again as senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) led the rush up ice and pulled up at the slot and found Sucese on the left side of the crease for the backdoor tap in and 1-0 lead at 11:18 of the first period.
- The Nittany Lions extended their lead with a power play tally as freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) sniped the right corner from the left slot beating Spartan goaltender Ed Minney over the left shoulder for the 2-0 lead at 14:12.
- Sucese then struck again as freshman Brandon Biro (Sherwood Park, Alb.) skated into the zone on an odd-man rush and dished the puck to the right side slot and Sucese fired it in at 19:10 for the 3-0 lead.
- Villiam Haag got the Spartans on the board in the third period and he shoved a backhand effort past Lion freshman Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) for the 3-1 score at 10:38.
- Sophomore Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) came right back for the Nittany Lions and stuffed home a rebound for his team-leading 19th goal of the season at 12:08 for the 4-1 score.
GOALTENDING
Jones stopped 22 shots to improve to 18-6-2 on the year while Minney made 31 saves, but falls to 5-13-2 with the loss.
NOTES
- Penn State held the 35-23 edge in shots and converted 1-of-7 chances with the man-advantage while going a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and 7-for-7 on the weekend.
- Goodwin extends his career long point-streak to 10 games, which also ties the Penn State record for longest point-streak recorded by Smirnov earlier this season.
- Sucese extends his point-streak to six games, which is now a new career-high.
- Smirnov tied Casey Bailey's single-season Penn State point record with his 40th of the season on his power play goal in the first period.
- Penn State sweeps the season series against the Spartans and move to 7-0-1 over the last two seasons.
- PSU improves to 17-2-2 on the season when leading after two periods of play.
