Nittany Lions Begin Spring Season with Solid Opening Round

Feb. 27, 2017

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" The Penn State women's golf team opened up their spring season today with an all-around great performance in the first round of the Hurricane Invitational, shooting 291 as a team, and sitting in fifth place.

The Nittany Lions have a great chance to climb the standings in rounds two and three, as they are only two strokes behind the second placed team Northwestern, and five behind Louisville who is currently in first place with a score of 286.

Newcomer Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) led the way with a team-high four birdies on her way to a round score of 72, even par. Herr shot the lowest round on the team and currently tied for 12th in the individual player leaderboard.

Sophomores Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.), and Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.), and senior Kate Granahan (Allentown, Pa) made up the final three scores that counted towards the team and coincidentally all posted a round score of 73, plus-1.

Basso started strong, shooting 2-under through her front nine, with birdies on three of her last four holes. She also tied Granahan with three birdies on the day. Waller added one birdie, as they all contributed to the excellent starting position the team is in heading into the second round.

Sophomore Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) got off to a shaky start as she finished with a round score of 81, but looks to bounce back with a solid round two performance.

Newcomer Ashni Dhruva (Katy, Tx.), who competed as Penn State's individual player, played well, finishing the round at 75, plus-3, with a birdie and an eagle.

Penn State's first golfer is teeing off tomorrow morning at 8:10 a.m. on the 1st hole. The Lions are grouped with Michigan and Barry University.
