BUFFALO, N.Y. - The No. 4 seed Penn State women's hockey team (9-21-5) concluded its 2016-17 season with a 2-1 loss to the No. 5 seed RIT Tigers (7-26-2) in the College Hockey America (CHA) First Round Thursday night inside the HARBORCENTER.
"I am really proud of the four seniors and what they meant to this program," interim head coach Dean Jackson said. "They certainly accomplished a lot as a group. They really helped lay a foundation for this program moving forward. I consider them pillars of our program and it is unfortunate for them that they had to play their last game today and losing in the fashion that we did."
After a scoreless opening period, freshman Brooke Madsen (Eagan, Minn.) put the Nittany Lions up 1-0 from close range at the 7:29 mark of the second period. On Madsen's goal, junior Christi Vetter (Lakeville, Minn.) tallied the assist.
The Tigers used a two-goal third period to capture the victory. RIT's Taylor Thurston tied the game at one goal apiece with 11:48 left in regulation and with 1:57 left on the clock, Cassie Clayton put the Tigers in front, 2-1.
In net for the Nittany Lions, junior Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded a 28-save outing, while RIT's Jenna de Jonge made 28 saves on the evening.
NOTES: RIT leads the all-time series against Penn State, 13-11-3...RIT outshot Penn State, 30-29...Penn State went 0-for-4 on the power play, while RIT went 1-for-4...Seniors Laura Bowman, Sarah Nielsen, Amy Petersen and Kelly Seward played in their final game as Nittany Lions...Bowman ended her career with program records in points (104), goals (61) and power play goals (14)...Petersen ended her career with program records in assists (63) and short-handed goals (4)...Nielsen and Petersen tied Emily Laurenzi for the Nittany Lion program record in games played (145).
