UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A quick first basket from Amari Carter (Washington, D.C.) opened the scoring for the Penn State women's basketball team, but Virginia Tech hit four 3-pointers in the opening quarter and used a 20-0 run between the first and second quarter to grab the momentum in the WNIT Third Round game at the Bryce Jordan Center.

After Virginia Tech opened up a 23-point lead near the end of the second quarter, Penn State was able to regroup during the break and trimmed the Hokie lead to just nine points with 13-seconds to play in the third period. A 3-pointer at the buzzer for Virginia Tech pushed the lead back to double-figures and Penn State couldn't get the deficit back to single-digits until late in the final stanza.

Sophomore Teniya Page (Chicago, Ill.) became the ninth Lady Lion to score 600-plus points in a single season, as she reached double digits for a 16th-straight game and registered her 15th 20-point game of the season. Page pushed her season total to 618 points, which moved her career total to 1,107 tallies to move her into No. 31 on the career scoring charts. Her 3 assists tonight pushed her into No. 20 on the career charts with a career total of 240.

Carter scored 10 points, her eighth double-figure scoring game of the season and third-straight in the WNIT. Carter added two assists and seven rebounds against the Hokies.

While the 20-0 run was a big difference, the Lady Lions eventually trimmed the lead to nine points with seconds left in the third quarter, 46-37. After the Page layup got the lead to single-digit, Samantha Hill banked in a 3-pointer to steal back momentum and give the Hokies a 12-point edge entering the fourth quarter.

First Quarter
The first quarter featured all three ties and three scoring changes, the final coming on the first of four makes from 3-point range in the game by Vanessa Panousis. After Penn State opened scoring on a layup from Amari Carter on the opening possession, Penn State was never able to build a lead of more than two points. The Hokies closed the quarter with five-straight points, which was the start of a game-changing run.
