UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) tied a career-high with four points on two goals and two assists as the 11th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions earned a 6-0 victory on Senior Night at Pegula ice arena against No. 16 Wiscosnin in Big Ten men's ice hockey action.
PSU improves to 21-9-2 overall and 10-7-1 in conference action while the Badgers fall to 19-12-1 on the year and 12-6-0 in Big Ten play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Nittany Lions opened the scoring as freshman defenseman Kris Myllari (Kanata, Ontario) punched home his own rebound on the doorstep with the man-advantage for the 1-0 score at the 10:44 mark.
- Just 50 seconds later freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) made an incredible neutral zone play to bat the puck out of midair to classmate Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) who in turn made a cross-ice pass to Goodwin who was able to beat Badger goaltender Matt Jurusik on the far blocker side for the 2-0 lead.
- Senior David Thompson (Glen Mills, Pa.) then extended the lead as his blast from the right point was initially blocked and then put past Jurusik off the stick of a Wisconsin defenseman for the 3-0 score at 8:47 of the second period.
- Goodwin then got his second goal of the game off an odd-man rush with Smirnov as he once again beat Jurusik to the blocker side at 10:13 of the third period for the 4-0 edge.
- Sophomore Alec Marsh (Bridgewater, N.J.) extended the lead further as he tapped home a great feed from classmate Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) right in front of the crease for the 5-0 lead at 12:29.
- Senior Zach Saar (Richland, Mich.) capped the scoring with a 5-on-3 power-play goal with just nine seconds remaining as both Thompson and Goodwin assisted on the goal as all five seniors were on the ice to finish the game.
GOALTENDING
Freshman Peyton Jones (Langehorne, Pa.) tied a career-high with 36 saves while earning his second shutout of the season to improve to 19-7-2 on the year while Jurusik stopped 34 pucks and falls to 9-7-0 on the year.
NOTES
- Penn State held the slim 40-36 edge in shots while going 2-for-4 with the man-advantage and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill as they haven't allowed a man-advantage goal over their last five games.
- With his first period assist Sminov set a new Penn State single-season record for points with 41 passing the previous mark of 40 held by Casey Bailey since the 2014-15 season. He added two more assists and now sits at 43 points.
- Goodwin was able to bookend his Pegula Ice Arena career as he scored his first collegiate goal on opening night against Army on October 11, 2013 and added two more tonight to give him 43 for his career just two shy of Casey Bailey's program record of 45.
- Sucese extends his career long point streak to eight games (six goals, six assists).
- Penn State sets a new single-season wins record at Pegula Ice Arena as they collect their 14th home win of the season and they also tie their single-season win record of 21 set just last season.
