Garcia Punches NCAA Ticket in 1-meter

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. -- Penn State sophomore Hector Garcia Boissier (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) won the 1-meter springboard to earn his second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships Monday afternoon at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships Monday in the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Competition continues Tuesday at noon with the men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter events. Platform diving will be held Wednesday starting at 11 a.m.

Garcia was second after the preliminaries with a score of 371.50 and posted a score of 367.80 in the finals for a 12-dive score of 739.30 to place first, nine points ahead of Virginia Tech's Benjamin Schiesl. He was joined in the finals by junior Connor Scanlon (Laurel, Md.), who placed 12th with a 12-dive score of 599.35. Jack Crow (Bethesda, Md.) was 27th with a six-dive score of 256.50.

On the women's side, Christina Crowell (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) led a trio of Nittany Lions with a 21st-place finish with a six-dive score of 256.75, just 5.85 points shy of qualifying for finals. Senior Mackenzie Cornell (Germantown, Md.) trailed in 23rd (256.10) by just .65 points and Elaina Faerber (Potomac, Md.) was 29th (238.60).

NCAA schools are divided into five zones for diving based upon geographical location. Zone A consists of schools in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. A total of 107 divers have qualified for the Zone A Championship on at least one board. Women had to post scores of at least 265 points to qualify for the zone meet on the one-meter board, 280 points to take part in the three-meter event and 225 points to compete in platform diving at the meet. Men were required at attain scores of at least 300 points on the one meter, 320 points on the three meter and 300 points in platform diving to advance to the zone meet on the respective boards.

The format for the two springboard events consists of six dives for all entered divers with the top-18 finishers from the preliminary round advancing to the finals where each will again perform six dives. Scores from the preliminary round are carried over into the finals. The platform event features all entered divers taking 12 dives.

Zone A will send six men's divers on the 1-meter, five on the 3-meter and four in platform diving to the national championship, while the women will advance five divers from the 1-meter event, seven from the 3-meter and four from the platform competitions to the NCAA meet.

IUPUI and the Indiana Sports Corp will host the 2017 host both the women's (Mar. 16-18) and men's (Mar. 23-25) NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship meets in the Indiana Natatorium in Indianapolis.
