CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. ââ'¬" Penn State sophomore men's diver Hector Garcia Boissier (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) placed second in the 3-meter springboard Tuesday at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in the Christiansburg Aquatic Center to qualify for a second diving event at the NCAA Championships.

Garcia posted a 12-dive score of 729.10, scoring 375.40 in the preliminaries and 353.70 in the finals to place second to Pitt's Dominic Giordano (805.45) to earn an automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships. He qualified in the 1-meter Monday, winning the event with a score of 739.30.

Just missing out on cracking the top five to advance to the NCAA Championships was sophomore Jack Crow (Bethesda, Md.), who placed seventh, 8.05 points out of fifth with a 12-dive score of 677.80. Crow will have one more chance to return to the NCAA Championships Wednesday as he and Garcia will compete in the platform starting at 11 a.m.

Also competing for the men Tuesday was junior Connor Scanlon (Laurel, Md.), who was 21st in the preliminaries with a six-dive score of 292.05.

Senior Mackenzie Cornell (Germantown, Md.) cracked the Top 10 in the women's 3-meter, leading the Nittany Lions with a score of 530.40. She ranked fifth in the preliminaries with a score of 277.10. Freshman Elaina Faerber (Potomac, Md.) also reached the finals and placed 19th with a score of 476.40, while Christina Crowell (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) posted a six-dive score of 205.85 in the prelims.

The format for the two springboard events consists of six dives for all entered divers with the top-18 finishers from the preliminary round advancing to the finals where each will again perform six dives. Scores from the preliminary round are carried over into the finals. The platform event features all entered divers taking 12 dives.

Zone A will send six men's divers on the 1-meter, five on the 3-meter and four in platform diving to the national championship, while the women will advance five divers from the 1-meter event, seven from the 3-meter and four from the platform competitions to the NCAA meet.

IUPUI and the Indiana Sports Corp will host the 2017 host both the women's (Mar. 16-18) and men's (Mar. 23-25) NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship meets in the Indiana Natatorium in Indianapolis.
