UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Sophomore Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) scored five times to help lead No. 6 Penn State past Ohio State, 16-12, in Big Ten women's lacrosse action this afternoon from the Penn State Lacrosse Field.

The Nittany Lions improve to 12-1 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in conference play while the Buckeyes fall to 6-8 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten.

Carter added one assist for a game-high six points while senior Abby Smucker (Bel Air, Md.) added a hat trick and classmate Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) collected five points on a pair of scores and three assists. Junior Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) and senior Taylor Bleistein (Bayville, N.Y.) each added two goals for Penn State.

After back-to-back goals from Baley Parrott gave Ohio State the 6-3 lead with just 4:30 remaining in the first half it was Smucker who found space in the defense and fired a shot into the top right corner of the cage at the 3:37 mark to ignite the Nittany Lion offense.

Carter followed with two-in-a-row sending the game into halftime tied 6-6. Coming out of the break it was Smucker again at 28:22 as the Lions scored the first five goals of the second half to open up the 11-6 lead. Gallagher scored twice during this span while Lazo and Bleistein added the other two scores.

The Buckeyes continued to fight using three straight goals of their own to cut the deficit to just a pair after Molly Wood tickled the twine at the 19:13 mark. But, Penn State came right back as Bleistein and freshman Mari Auth (Street, Md.) scored two quick ones for the 13-9 lead midway through the second half.

Following a single Ohio State goal, Lazo Carter and Smucker each registered goals and even after two late Buckeye tallies it was not enough as the Nittany Lions captured the victory.

Senior Cat Rainone (Newtown Square, Pa.) stopped a career-high 11 shots to improve to 11-1 on the year while her counterpart, Jill Rizzo, collected 13 saves in the defeat to fall to 6-8 overall.

Rainone also collected a game-high six ground balls while Smucker and Lazo added three each. Smucker, junior Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) and senior Natalie Schmitt (Malvern, Pa.) each collected two caused turnovers as the Nittany Lions as a team caused 10 Buckeye miscues.

Penn State held the 36-31 edge in shots including the 29-23 margin on target while also controlling ground balls, 23-19. Both sides collected 15 draw controls.

The Nittany Lions return to action next Saturday against Virginia at 1 p.m. as part of senior day at the Penn State Lacrosse Field.
