UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - For the sixth time in 2017, Penn State men's lacrosse attackman Mac O'Keefe claimed the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week honors on Tuesday afternoon as announced by the league's office.
O'Keefe's six Freshman of the Week honors mark the most by any rookie in the Big Ten this season.
The Syosset, New York, native earned the award after scoring a hat trick against the Scarlet Knights to pace Penn State to a 13-7 win and clinch a spot in the Big Ten tournament. The hat trick marked O'Keefe's eighth game of the season scoring three or more goals.
O'Keefe has now scored 42 goals on the season, tied for the third most in the nation. The 42 goals are second most in a single season by a Penn State freshman, outdone by only TJ Sanders in 2013 (44 goals). O'Keefe's 42 goals also tie for fifth on the Penn State single-season goals leader board. With eight more goals, O'Keefe would have the most single season goals by a Penn State player, ever.
O'Keefe and the rest of the Nittany Lions will conclude the regular season on Sunday, April 30, taking on Michigan at 2 p.m. in Michigan Stadium. The game, tape delayed on the Big Ten Network, will be streamed live on BTN2go.com with Mike Wolf and Jesse Schwartzman on the call.
