April 28, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior standout Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) and sophomore sensation Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) were both named a Tewaaraton Award nominee as one of the top 25 players in women's college lacrosse when the list was announced Friday morning.

From this group of 25, five finalists will be chosen on May 11 and have the opportunity to join their male counterparts at the 17th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony on Thursday, June 1 in Washington, D.C.

Fifteen different schools are represented on this year's list as Maryland and Florida lead the way with four and three representatives, respectfully.

Both Carter and Lazo are first-time nominee's joining five other Nittany Lions who hold that honor including Madison Cyr who was the lone Penn State player to be named to the top-25 list last season. Under coach Missy Doherty, the Nittany Lions have seen five players become Tewaaraton nominees as Dana Cahill (2012) and Maggie McCormick (2013, 2015) have also been recognized in the past.

The Maryland natives are both in the midst of career seasons as Lazo leads the Big Ten and ranks tenth in the nation with 77 points on 41 goals and 36 assists. Carter paces the Big Ten with her 58 goals, which rank fourth in the entire nation while her 67 points rank second in the conference behind Lazo and tie for 25th in the nation.

Carter is coming off her fourth Big Ten Offensive Player of the week as she tied her career-high with six goals against No. 1 Maryland last Thursday night. The sophomore has scored 106 goals in just 37 career games during her time at Penn State and is quickly approaching the record books.

Lazo is just one point shy of becoming the 13th Nittany Lion to reach 200 career points as she currently sits tied for 13th on the all-time scoring list with 199 points. The senior's 82 career assists rank seventh in program history while her 117 goals are four shy of 16th on the all-time list.

Penn State closes its regular season with a trip to Ann Arbor to battle Michigan at 11 a.m. on Sunday before heading to College Park the following weekend as the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament to take on No. 3 Northwestern at 8:30 p.m. in the Big Ten Semifinals.
