UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- In front of a record crowd of 922 spectators and behind a career-high 14 save performance by senior Cat Rainone (Newtown Square, Pa.) the fifth ranked Penn State women's lacrosse team defeated No. 15 Virginia, 12-8, in non-conference action from the Penn State Lacrosse Field this afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (13-1) opened the scoring as sophomore Kayla Brisolari (Crofton, Md.) found the back of the net on a free position shot at the 27:54 mark of the first half for the 1-0 lead. However, the Cavaliers (7-7) used a 6-1 scoring run over the next 20 minutes to take command of the game with a 6-2 lead at the eight-minute mark.

Maggie Jackson scored twice for Virginia during the spurt while PSU sophomore Kelly Daggett (Bainbridge, Pa.) scored the lone Nittany Lion tally at the 20:28 mark.

The Lions fought back scoring twice in the final 2:51 as senior Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) fired home her lone goal of the afternoon before junior Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) notched her first of the game with just four seconds left before halftime.

Trailing 6-4 coming out of the intermission, Penn State used the momentum they gained near the end of the first half and scored twice more to bring the game back even at 6-6. O'Donnell and Smucker registered the goals at 22:24 and 21:30, respectively.

Avery Shoemaker tilted the game back in favor of Virginia just 47 ticks later with her second of the contest for the 7-6 edge at the 20:43 mark. However, that would be as close as the Cavaliers would get as the Nittany Lions used a pair of 3-0 spurts to close out the game on a 6-1 scoring run.

Smucker started the streak with the equalizer at the 19:27 mark as she finished the game with four points on two goals and a pair of helpers. O'Donnell scored twice more to finish the contest with a game-high four goals while Brisolari added her second of the contest and sophomore classmates Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) and Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) closed out the scoring for the hosts.

Carter improves her goal streak to 21 games, while Smucker has now scored two or more goals in four straight contests. O'Donnell added a team-high five ground balls to go along with her four tallies while Smucker and Brisolari chipped in with four each to help the hosts to the 21-20 ground ball advantage.

Smucker and Carter controlled the draw as they each grabbed three to help Penn State hold the 13-9 edge in draws. The Nittany Lions also held the slim 37-35 advantage in shots including the 24-22 edge on target.

Rainone improves to 12-1 on the year after her career-high 14 saves while also grabbing a pair of ground balls. Her counterpart, Rachel Vander Kolk falls to 7-7 after a 12 save performance in the setback.

Penn State hits the road for their next contest as they travel to Northwestern for an evening affair on Thursday at 7 p.m.
