Los Angeles, Calif. -- - Penn State men's basketball rising sophomore guard Tony Carr has been invited to participate in the 2017 Nike Basketball Academy Aug. 15-20 in Los Angeles, Calif. Carr joins the roster of the nation's ¬top 20 collegiate players for the annual skills development camp and will learn from and train alongside NBA superstars present and past.
"I am incredibly honored to be invited to this prestigious camp and have the opportunity to learn from individuals who are the very best in the game," Carr said. "My goal is to be a sponge and soak up and learn as much as possible, and return to Penn State a better player and leader."
In 2015, Nike combined its positional skills camps and launched a new format with premium training, a combine experience, off-court workouts, drills, film sessions, and 5-on-5 competition. Carr will travel to Los Angeles for the Nike Basketball Academy after returning from the Nittany Lions' foreign tour in the Bahamas in early August.
As a true freshman, the 6-3, 198 lb. Carr started all 33 games during the 2016-17 season and led the team with 13.1 points and 4.2 assists per game. His 139 assists total set the Penn State freshman record for that category. Carr became the first freshman in program history to earn all-conference recognition as an honorable mention pick and was the fourth Nittany Lion to earn a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman team.
Carr, from Philadelphia, Pa., helped lead Roman Catholic High School to back-to-back PIAA AAAA state championships in 2015 and 2016. ESPN rated him as Pennsylvania's best basketball player for the class of 2016.
"To be selected as one the top 20 players in the nation by Nike is a great honor and speaks volumes about Tony's abilities," said Nittany Lion basketball coach Patrick Chambers. "This experience will provide Tony with a chance to compete against high-level competition as well as receive instruction from some of the NBA's best."
