FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - In front of a Razorback Field record 3,401 fans, the No. 9 Penn State women's soccer team used a two-goal second half to outlast the Arkansas Razorbacks, 4-2, Friday night. In the contest, junior Marissa Sheva (Sellersville, Pa.) netted her second two-goal game of the season.
Just 90 seconds into the contest, Arkansas (1-2-0) took an early 1-0 lead over Penn State (3-0-0) as Stefani Doyle netted her first goal of the season from five-yards out.
The Penn State offense then tied the game at one goal apiece on Frannie Crouse's (Greensburg, Pa.) first goal of the 2017 campaign during the ninth minute of play. Crouse connected on a one-timer from junior Charlotte Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) from just outside the 18-yard box.
Penn State took its first lead of the evening in the 19th minute on Sheva's third goal of the season. From 10-yards out, Sheva placed the ball under the crossbar in the upper-right corner to put the Nittany Lions up 2-1.
The two teams went to the halftime break with Penn State leading, 2-1, and with shots in favor of Penn State, 6-4.
Similar to the start of the match, Arkansas opened the second of play with an early goal. Taylor Malham tied the game at two goals apiece just 80 seconds into the second half.
With the score tied 2-2, Sheva posted her second goal of the evening, and the fourth of the season during the 55th minute. From close-range, Sheva buried a pass from redshirt junior defender Maddie Elliston (Omaha, Neb.).
Redshirt sophomore defender Kaleigh Riehl (Fairfax Station, Va.) tacked on an insurance goal for the Nittany Lions on a header off an Emily Ogle (Strongsville, Ohio) corner kick during the 71st minute.
In net, redshirt junior Rose Chandler (Atlanta, Ga.) tallied a three-save outing en route to the Penn State victory, including a save on Malham with 9:43 left in regulation.
Penn State concludes its two-match road trip at No. 1 West Virginia on Sept. 2. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va.
