WVB Cracks Top-5 in AVCA Poll

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -
Following a 3-0 weekend at the West Virginia Tournament, the Penn State women's volleyball team has cracked into the top five in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Week One poll as the Nittany Lions moved up to No. 5.

Penn State finished the opening weekend with three straight sweeps with wins over UT Martin, Delaware, and host West Virginia. Senior Haleigh Washington (Colorado Springs, Co.) was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament and classmate Simone Lee (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Also on the weekend, senior Ali Frantti (Spring Grove, Ill.) become the 26th player in program history to reach the 1,000-kill mark.

Eight other Big Ten league members join the Lions, the preseason conference favorites, in the AVCA poll. Minnesota (No. 2) and Wisconsin (No. 6) join Penn State in the top ten. Nebraska (No. 12), Michigan (No. 19), Ohio State (No. 20), Purdue (No. 21), and Michigan State (No. 23) round out the list.

Penn State will hit the road for the Texas A&M Tournament where they will face Stanford, who moved to No. 1 in this week's poll, on Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET, and host Texas A&M on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
