Freund Wins Canadian National Championship in 50m Breaststroke

MONTREAL - Penn State sophomore Kaelan Freund (Lethbridge, Alberta) took gold in the 50-meter breaststroke Saturday evening in the 2017 Canadian Swimming Championships at Olympic Park Sport Centre.

Freund earned his first national championship medal in 27.94 seconds, improving on his leading preliminary time of 27.97 seconds. Also competing Saturday was classmate Liam Veregin (Ottawa, Ontario), who placed 10th in the 100 backstroke with a best time of 58.02 seconds.

Both were also finalists Friday. Freund was seventh in the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.71, while Veregin was 16th in the 200 back in 2:07.55.
