MADISON, Wis. - The Penn State men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Wisconsin Badgers Saturday night at the McClimon Complex.
The Nittany Lions fall to 2-4-2 overall on the season and 0-3-0 against Big Ten competition, while Wisconsin improves to 4-2-2 overall and 2-1-0 in Big Ten action.
The two teams looked to get on the board early in the match, as the two squads exchanged shot attempts during the opening 10 minutes of the night.
In the first 10 minutes of the match, both goalkeepers kept busy, as Evan Finney (San Francisco, Calif.) made two saves for Penn State and Wisconsin's Philipp Schilling recorded three saves.
Wisconsin tallied the game's lone goal on Tom Barlow's fourth goal of the season in the 14th minute of action. On the play, Barlow moved the ball up the left side of the field before placing a shot into the right side of the net from 12 yards out.
Offensively, the Badgers edged the Nittany Lions in shot attempts, 19-18, while the Nittany Lions tallied a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Aaron Molloy (Dublin, Ireland) paced the Blue & White with five shot attempts with Ethan Beckford (Manchester, England) adding four shot attempts of his own.
Down 1-0 with under 10 minutes to go in regulation, Finney tallied saves in the 83rd and 85th minute to keep the contest within one goal. Looking to send the game into overtime, the Nittany Lions recorded a pair of shot attempts during the final minute of regulation, but were unable to get a shot on goal.
The Nittany Lions are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 27, against Temple in Philadelphia. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start at the Temple Sports Complex.
