COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 6 Penn State women's soccer team dropped its first Big Ten match of the season with a 1-0 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes Saturday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
With the loss, Penn State falls to 7-3-1 on the year and 3-1-1 in Big Ten action, while Ohio State improves to 9-2-1 in 2017 and 4-1-0 in Big Ten play.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes of action, the two teams went into halftime with Penn State leading Ohio State in shot attempts, 4-1. In the first half, the Buckeye defense stepped up to block two of Penn State's four shot attempts.
The Buckeyes netted the game's lone goal during the 65th minute of action, as Sammy Edwards was able to find the back of the net from close-range at 64:03.
Looking for the game-tying goal, the Penn State offense tallied five shot attempts during the final 15 minutes of regulation, including a shot from Alina Ortega Jurado (Waldgirmes, Germany) that hit the crossbar in the 82nd minute.
A defensive battle between the two teams, the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes combined for 17 shot attempts on the evening with only five going on goal.
Penn State returns home from its three-match road trip with a pair of contests next weekend at Jeffrey Field. The Nittany Lions will host Michigan on Friday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. before closing out the weekend with Michigan State on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m.
