UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - For the sixth-straight year the No. 11 Penn State women's cross country team claimed the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe team title winning this year's meet, earning six head-to-head wins in the double-dual scored format Friday afternoon at the Blue-White Golf Course.
Penn State placed four runners in the top-11 led by Jillian Hunsberger who claimed individual honors making this her second win of the year in as many meets to open the 2017 season with back-to-back wins following last weeks Dolan Duals. The senior from Pittsburgh, Pa. finished the 6K in 21:07.
Hunsberger becomes the eighth Nittany Lion to claim the individual title and marks the 10th time Penn State has grabbed the top spot. The Nittany Lions have now won 11-of-17 Spiked Shoe Invitational's since 2000 and the third-straight dating back to 2015 (Tori Gerlach '15, Tessa Barrett '16).
Rounding out scoring for the Nittany Lions behind Hunsberger, a 2016 NCAA cross country All-American, were Kathryn Munks (21:22), Alison Willingymre (21:34), Greta Lindsley (21:44), and Julia Guerra (22:30) in fourth, eighth, 11th and 29th-place, respectively.
Also competing for Penn State were Victoria Crawford (22:37), Noemie Noullet (22:39), Grace Trucilla (23:39) and Marisa Deichert (24:18 in 32nd, 35th, 54th and 70th-place, respectively.
The Penn State men's team was led by Colin Abert who was the top finisher at the Spiked Shoe Invtl. crossing the tape in 25:46. Rounding out scoring for Penn State were Timothy McGowan (25:53), Bobby Hill (26:15), John McGowan (26:31) and Billy McDevitt (26:47) in third, seventh, 13th and 15th-place, respectively. Abert becomes the first Nittany Lion to claim the Spiked Shoe individual title since Matt Fischer in 2014.
Also competing for the men's team were Brady Bobbitt (26:54), Ben Bumgarner (27:05), William Loevner (27:48), Domenic Perretta (28:10) and Jordan Makins (29:57) in 18th, 20th, 26th, 39th and 55th-place, respectively
The Nittany Lions will travel to Stillwater, Okla. Sat., Sept. 30 for the Cowboy Jamboree set to begin at 12 p.m. ET
