Senior CLASS Award Release

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Penn State men's ice hockey senior captain David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) is one of 15 people named as a nominee for the 2016-17 Senior CLASS Award as released earlier Friday afternoon.

This is just the second time a Penn State men's hockey student-athlete has been nominated for this prestigious award, which honors excellence on the field, in the community, and in the classroom as well as strong leadership. It was just last season when David Glen '16 took home the hardware after being nominated alongside classmate Luke Juha '16.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

Senior CLASS Award stands for "Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®" and takes a focus on the total student-athlete and his performances on and off the ice.

Goodwin is one of three Big Ten nominee's as Minnesota's Justin Kloos and Ohio State's Nick Schilkey also join the list.

The senior has been involved in many different community outreach initiatives since enrolling at Penn State and has been instrumental in the team's involvement with THON. As well as being a double major in economics and Spanish, Goodwin was voted team captain this season by his peers. Goodwin has also sacrificed time each summer for the past three years to travel abroad and help better communities in places such as El Salvador, Mexico and most recently Cuba.

The 15 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2017 NCAA Men's Frozen Final Four® in April.
