UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State junior quarterback Trace McSorley (Ashburn, Va.) is among the 20 candidates for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as the watch list was trimmed Wednesday.
The Golden Arm Award is presented at the end of each football season and the winner is selected based on his accomplishments both on and off the field. Candidates must be a college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class. The Golden Arm Award is named in honor of Johnny Unitas, who was an 18-year veteran of the NFL and played his collegiate career at the University of Louisville before joining the Baltimore Colts in 1958. His career passing figures include 2,830 pass completions for 40,239 yards, 290 touchdowns and throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games.
McSorley is among the national leaders with 1,597 passing yards (19th in FBS), 13 passing touchdowns (16th) and 295.8 yards of total offense per game (25th). He is averaging 266.2 yards per game. He also has an efficiency of 154.1, which is 23rd in FBS. McSorley is 19th in FBS with a 67.0 percent completion percentage (130-194). McSorley has thrown a touchdown pass in 21-straight games, which is the third-longest active streak in FBS. He has also found success on the ground with 178 rushing yards and four rushing scores. McSorley is ninth in FBS in points responsible for with 102 in six games.
The third-ranked Nittany Lions are on a bye this week before hosting Michigan next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. The game can also be heard on GoPSUsports.com and the Penn State Sports Network.
