COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 6 Penn State battled No. 16 Maryland for 86-minutes Sunday afternoon at Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex before succumbing to a double-overtime goal that sealed the win for the Terrapins, 2-1.

Both teams jockeyed for position on the field for 35-minutes with the squads hitting the locker room at halftime tied 0-0. In the opening half Maryland posted 10 shots compared to three by the Nittany Lions.

Maryland (10-5, 5-2) broke the 0-0 tie in the 41st-minute with Lein Holsboer scoring her ninth goal of the season to put the Terrapins up by one early in the first half.

Penn State (12-3, 4-2) responded quickly with a goal of its own a short two minutes later as Redshirt-Freshman Abby Myers scored her first career goal 43rd-minute to knot it up at one goal apiece.

The next 15-minutes had each bench on pins and needles as Penn State (4) and Maryland (2) each had good looks at the cage with shots that could've been the one to end it all.

Following a scoreless first overtime, the two teams played an additional 1:12 in the second overtime before Maryland's Carrie Hanks used a high shot just inside crossbar from the left side to net the walk-off goal for the win.

Jenny Rizzo made nine saves, tying a season-high over her 86-minutes in the cage while Skyler Fretz added to her defensive saves total adding one during today's contest to bring her season total to eight and her career total to 10 over four seasons.

Maryland improved to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play while Penn State surrendered only the third loss of the season to drop to 12-3 overall and a 4-2 mark in Big Ten play.

The last time Penn State fell in double overtime was on October 15, 2004, vs. Iowa as the Hawkeyes walked away with a 2-1 win.

Penn State will be back in action Friday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. when the Nittany Lions host Rutgers in the final home contest of the regular season and Senior Day at Field Hockey Complex.
