UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State Nittany Lion men's tennis team is back on the court this weekend for the ITA Regional Championship tournament. The blue and white are headed to Liberty University to compete at the Cook Tennis Center in Lynchburg, Va. Play will begin Thursday, October 19 and conclude Monday, October 23.
The previous two tournaments, the Lions only travelled four players. Constant De La Bassetiere (Reims, France), Christian Lakoseljac (King City, Ontario), Alp Sentay (Izmir, Turkey) and Christos Antonopoulos (Athens, Greece) have produced a strong fall season thus far. For this tournament, the entire team is traveling to Lynchburg, Va. as the top seed going into the weekend. The Nittany Lions are excited to see all members of the team play championship level tennis this weekend.
"It's always a tough tournament because you have to win so many matches," said head coach Jeff Zinn. "We did a good job of that at Princeton but we didn't do too good of a job of that at the ITA All-American Championships. I was hoping we could win some more matches there, so we've been on both sides of that where we dug our feet in, did well, didn't do as well, but All-Americans that's the best players in the country. Hopefully those very close matches will go our way in this tournament."
"We are the top seeds going into regionals so we just have to stay focused and do what we know we are capable of doing," said associate head coach Paul Tobin. "These next several tournaments are crucial in determining lineup positions at the bottom half of our roster. This tournament will also help us figure out our doubles pairings moving forward into the spring. It's hard to gauge development when the guys are only practicing and competing against each other."
