Fifth-Annual Fit-For-Fritz Set for Nov. 5

Oct. 30, 2017

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Fit-For-Fritz event is back and ready for a fifth year in what hopes to be another record-breaking year in the fight against cancer.

Penn State Athletics would like to invite you to the Fifth Annual Fit-For-Fritz event on Sunday, November 5th, hosted by the Penn State Track & Field team. The event will begin with a one-mile walk on the outdoor track starting at 11 a.m. (open to all community members), register to walk with us through this link!

Following the walk, we will move into the Multi-Sport facility, where there will be a dodgeball tournament, fitness challenges, and karaoke.

The event, which originated in 2013 in support of track and field assistant coach Fritz Spence, is a Walk-A-Thon hosted at the Indoor Multi-Sport Complex and made possible by the collaboration of the coaching staff, the Penn State Athletics Department, and the track and field student-athletes.

All attendees will also have the opportunity to get swabbed for the National Bone Marrow Registry through our partner, Be The Match.

Last year, the Athletic Department and the Be The Match Program saw the incredible impact they could make when they joined together as one team for an important cause.

At the event, we will have a booth set up to get students and community members swabbed for the National Bone Marrow Registry. We will also have opportunities to donate money to our fundraising beneficiary, American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in Hershey, Pa.

However, the highlight of the weekend will probably be karaoke where volunteers will showcase their musical talents.

In midst of the fun and games though, Spence wants the community to understand the importance of Fit-For-Fritz and that the effect it has reaches far beyond the walls of Penn State.

"Every four minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer and the more we can do to support and help, the better," Spence said. "[The bone marrow registry] is really important to me because a few years ago year I was in need of someone and it was really hard for me to find a match. I want the community to come out and support."

In its inaugural year (2013), the event raised just over $11,000.

All funds raised prior to and during the event will be donated to the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in Hershey, PA, where Coach Fritz Spence and his wife Teri stayed for free during his battle against leukemia.
