GLENDALE, Ariz. - Sophomore goaltender Chris Funkey (Orland Park, Ill.) secured his second career shutout to help lift Penn State past Arizona State, 7-0, in non-conference ice hockey action this evening from Gila River Arena.
The Nittany Lions improve to 6-7-0 on the year while the Sun Devils fall to 2-7-2 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first period, Penn State opened the scoring on the man-advantage as freshman Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa.) registered his first career goal as he buried the rebound off senior Trevor Hamilton's (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) initial shot at 9:00 of the second period. Junior's Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) and Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) picked up assists on the goal after the puck was knocked around in front of the net.
- Barratt then secured his second of the game on another rebound during the power-play after Hamilton made a tremendous play splitting a pair of defenders entering the zone and playing a shot off Sun Devil net-minder Joey Daccord's right pad at 17:33 of the middle frame.
- The Nittany Lions extended their lead in the third period as a strong fore-check from sophomore Brandon Biro (Sherwood Park, Alb.) led to a beautiful goal by freshman Sam Sternschein (Syosset, N.Y.), the first of his career, at 6:37.
- Penn State continued to pressure and scored a 4-on-4 goal as sophomore Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) curled behind the net and found Biro wide open on the left side of the crease for the 4-0 lead at 12:06 of the third period.
- Sophomore Nikita Pavlychev (Yaroslavl, Russia) and senior Erik Autio (Espoo, Finland) each added rebound goals at 14:47 and 18:42, respectively, to increase the lead to 6-0 and just 36 seconds after Autio's goal Sucese found the back of the net for the final tally at 19:18 and the 7-0 score.
GOALTENDING
Funkey stopped all 15 shots he faced to improve to 1-2-0 on the year and has now stopped all 33 shots in his career against Arizona State in 120 minutes of action. Daccord falls to 2-6-2 on the year after collecting 42 saves.
NOTES
- Penn State held the 49-15 edge in shots on goal, the lowest amount of shots by an opponent all season. Penn State held the Sun Devils to just eight shots over the final two periods, four in each also a season low.
- Penn State was brilliant on special teams going 2-for-5 on the man-advantage and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
- Autio moves into a tie with Dylan Richard '17 for sixth on the Penn State all-time games played list for skaters as he suited up in his 121st career game this evening.
- Penn State's five third period goals tie a program record for most goals in a single period, which has been done three times before the last coming against these same Sun Devils last November.
- Six Nittany Lions recorded multi-point games including a pair of freshman with the first of their careers. Barratt secured his first career multi-point and multi-goal game as he notched the first two goals of his collegiate career while Sternschein added a goal and an assist for his first career multi-point effort.
- Sturtz secures his fifth multi-point game of the season and the 23rd of his career with a pair of assists on the night.
- Biro tied a career-high with a three-point effort, his second multi-point game of the season and the fifth of his career with one goal and a pair of assists.
- Sucese secured his first multi-point game of the season after tallying one goal and one assist. It is the 11th multi-point game of his career.
- Hamilton collected his third multi-point game this season and the sixth of his career after a pair of assists.
