FNC: Lion Women Successful at Garret Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; November 4, 2017 - The Penn State women's fencing team started off the Garret Open on Saturday, Nov. 4, in the White Building. Penn State was strong in the saber as it claimed first and third place finishes.

The women's foil squad started the day off for Penn State. Leading the way for head coach Wes Glon's squad was sophomore Jade Rowland (Princeton Junction, N.J.), who finished in fifth place. Finishing in tenth and 11th place were freshmen Alissa Gozali (Singapore, Singapore) and Isabella Zuzulo (Newtown, Pa.), and finishing right behind them, in 13th place, was sophomore Tyanne Fong (Ampang, Malaysia).

Following foil was women's epee. Juniors Nicolette Vigna (Thornwood, N.Y.) and Anastasia Kalonji (Rennes, France) finished in sixth and tenth, and sophomore Yumin Wang (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) finished in 14th place.

Women's saber was the final weapon contested on the day. Freshman Zara Moss (Cranberry Township, Pa.) claimed first place. Fellow freshman Sara Cunningham (Decatur, Ga.) tied for third place, and juniors Karen Chang (Hong Kong, China) and DeAna Oliver (Montclair, N.J.) finished in fifth and seventh place.

After this weekend's action in University Park, select Penn State fencers will participate in the Junior/Cadet/Y-14 NAC event that starts Saturday, Nov.11, through Monday, Nov. 13.
