WGYM Welcomes Two

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Melissa Astarita (Morganville, New Jersey) and Dymiana Cox (Elmont, New York) have signed their National Letters of Intent to attend Penn State University and participate in women's gymnastics starting in the 2019 season, head coach Sarah Brown announced Wednesday.

Melissa Astarita joins the Nittany Lions after competing at Action Gymnastics under coach Magdalena During. A native of Morganville, New Jersey, Melissa is the daughter of Michael and Natalie Astarita. While at Penn State, Melissa plans to major in mathematics.

At the 2017 Level 10 Regionals, Astarita finished seventh on the floor exercise, 10th on the vault, and 12th in the all-around. At the 2017 Level 10 New Jersey State meet, she placed first on the vault, fourth on the floor, and fifth in the all-around.

Coach Brown on Melissa:

Dymiana Cox joins the Penn State women's gymnastics program after competing for Parkettes Gymnastics under coaches Robin Netwall, John Holman, Bill and Donna Strauss. A native of Elmont, New York, Dymiana is the daughter of Darrell and Jessica Cox. While at Penn State, Dymiana plans to major in kinesiology and intends to attend medical school following graduation.

At the 2017 Junior Olympic Nationals, Dymiana finished 10th on the balance beam and 11th in the all-around. At the 2017 Level 10 Regional meet, she placed fourth on the balance beam, fifth in the all-around, and sixth on the floor exercise. At the 2017 Level 10 Pennsylvania State meet, she finished first on the balance beam, second on the floor exercise, second in the all-around, and fourth on the uneven bars.

"I've known Dymiana for a number of years and I've enjoyed watching her grow as person and as an athlete. She has made the commitment to graduate early to compete at Penn State and her determination and dedication to her training will be a great addition to our roster. Her strongest events are floor and beam and I can't wait to have her on campus!"
