COLUMBUS, Ohio - Junior Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored the game-tying goal with just 0.7 seconds remaining in regulation and potted the lone shootout goal to help Penn State earn two points against No. 11 Ohio State after a 5-5 tie and 1-0 shootout victory in Big Ten Conference action this evening from Value City Arena.
Penn State runs its unbeaten streak to five game (3-0-2) as they improve to 8-7-2 on the year and 3-4-2-1 in the Big Ten while Ohio State sits at 8-3-4 overall and 3-3-1-0 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State opened the scoring as sophomore Kris Myllari (Kanata, Ont.) fired a slap shot from the left dot that was blocked, but fluttered into the air and over the shoulder of Buckeye net-minder Sean Romeo for the 1-0 lead at 6:20 of the first period.
- The Buckeyes answered in the final minutes of the first frame as Christian Lampasso received a great pass from Austin Pooley and fired from below the right dot beating junior goaltender Chris Funkey (Orland Park, Ill.) high-glove for the 1-1 tie at 18:47.
- The Nittany Lions regained the lead as freshman Alex Limoges (Winchester, Va.) used a strong fore-check to cause a turnover near the left dot and he was left one-on-one with Romeo and went forehand-backhand-forehand for the unassisted goal and 2-1 lead at 4:58 of the second period.
- Junior Kevin Kerr (Bensalem, Pa.) extended the PSU lead as he received a pass from sophomore Brandon Biro (Sherwood Park, Alb.) and skated down the slot before firing off Romeo's shoulder and into the back of the net at 14:04 of the second period for the 3-1 edge.
- Dakota Joshua cut the deficit to a single goal early in the third period as he finished a great feed from Tanner Laczynski out front for the 3-2 score at 3:38.
- Less than a minute later Laczynski tied the game on the power-play as he fired a quick wrister from the left circle for the 3-3 score at 4:33 of the third period.
- Brendon Kearney then made it three straight Buckeye goals as he one-timed a feed from Lampasso for the 4-3 lead at 8:53 of the final frame.
- Senior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) then tied the contest again as he fired a wrist shot from the slot and through traffic for the 4-4 tie at 12:25 of the period. Kerr secured the primary assist on the play.
- Freddy Gerard then gave the lead back to the hosts has he ripped a pass from Matthew Weis into the back of the net from the left circle at 15:35 for the 5-4 advantage.
- With less than a second remaining junior Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) fired a shot from the point through traffic that trickled across the goal line with just 0.7 seconds on the clock for the 5-5 tie.
GOALTENDING
Funkey stopped 43 shots to move to 1-2-1 on the year while Romeo made 31 saves and now sits at 7-3-4 for the season.
NOTES
- Penn State was outshot for just the second time all season (48-36) and the four third period goals allowed are the most they've given up in a single period all season. The Nittany Lions were also 0-for-5 with the man-advantage while Ohio State went 1-for-3 on the power-play.
- Kerr extends his point-streak to four games, which ties his career-high, after scoring his first goal of the season in the second period. Kerr also secured his third multi-point game of the season and the eighth of his career.
- Sturtz is now riding a three-game point streak after registering his seventh multi-point game this season and the 25th of his career. His 21 points are tied for second in the Big Ten. He is also now 2-for-2 in shootouts this season.
- After his first period goal, Myllari is now just one point shy of tying David Thompson '17 for eighth on the Penn State all-time points list for defenseman.
- With his ninth career goal, Hamilton is now alone in fourth on the Penn State all-time goals list for defensemen. He also extends his point-streak to three games and ties his career-best goal streak of two games, which he has done twice before.
- Hamilton moves into fourth on the Penn State all-time points list for defenseman with 40 following his fourth multi-point game this season and the seventh of his career. Kerr is one point back in fifth with 39.
- With 16 saves in the third period, Funkey set a new career-high for saves in a single period. His 43 total saves is also a career-high.
- Ohio State's third period power-play goal broke up a string of 20 straight kills for the Nittany Lions.
- The extra attacker goal for Penn State marks the first time in program history the Nittany Lions have scored back-to-back extra attacker goals in the last minute of a game in program history.

Both teams return to action tomorrow afternoon for a 4 p.m. puck drop to close out the weekend series.
