EAST LANSING, Mich. – The 11th ranked Penn State men's ice hockey team used a three goal third period to defeat Michigan State, 4-2, this evening in Big Ten men's ice hockey action from Munn Ice Arena.
The Nittany Lions improve to 19-8-2 with the victory and 8-6-1 in the Big Ten while MSU falls to 6-20-3 on the year and 2-11-2 in conference action with the setback.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State opened the scoring at 3:14 of the first period as sophomore Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) sent a no look pass between his legs from behind the net to classmate Alec Marsh (Bridgewater, N.J.) and he used a fancy forehand-backhand move for the finish and the 1-0 score.
- The Spartans wasted little time in the second period to grab the equalizer as Joe Cox took advantage of a neutral ice turnover and skated into the slot with a nifty toe drag and fired past the glove of freshman goaltender Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) for the 1-1 score just 18 seconds into the middle frame.
- Michigan State grabbed the 2-1 lead briefly in the third period as Rhett Holland found the back of the net at 11:32, but it was short lived as sophomore Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) scored just 13 seconds later for the 2-2 tie.
- Senior Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alberta) then gave the Nittany Lions the lead back with a power play tally on a scramble out front of the net at 15:27 for the 3-2 score.
- Freshman Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) then found senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) for the empty net goal while skating two men down at 19:30 for the final score.
GOALTENDING
Jones stopped 26 shots to improve to 17-6-2 on the year while Spartan net-minder John Lethemon made 35 saves, but falls to 1-8-1 with the loss.
NOTES
- The Nittany Lions outshot the hosts 39-28, went 1-for-4 with the man-advantage, and were a perfect 4-for-4 on the PK.
- Penn State held Michigan State to two shots in the first period, the lowest totaled allowed in a single period all year by the Nittany Lions.
- Goodwin extends his point streak to nine games with his empty net tally while Sucese ties his career-high five-game point-streak with the assist on the final goal.
- Freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) saw his four-game point streak snapped as he was held off the scoresheet.
- Penn State improves to 3-0 this season against the Spartans and 6-0-1 over the last two seasons. The Nittany Lions also improve to 2-1-0 when tied after two periods of play.
- PSU is outscoring Michigan State 9-2 in the third period this season.
