OPENING TIP
Penn State did not commit a turnover in the first half vs. Minnesota and had its first of the game at the 14:14 mark of the second period. It was the lowest total since the Nittany Lions had three total vs. Purdue in the 2015 Big Ten Tournament (3/13/2015).
QUICK HITS
• Watkins' current streak of five-consecutive double-doubles is all against Big Ten opponents. Jarrett Stephens (1999-00) and John Amaechi (1994-95) each had seven straight double-doubles in their final seasons as Nittany Lions. Amaechi's last five double-doubles in his streak of seven were against Big Ten foes.
• Mike Watkins needs just five more made baskets to meet the minimum for the NCAA Division 1 active career leaders list for field goal percentage. Watkins is 235-369 for 63.7 percent, which would rank fourth.
• The back-to-back overtime games vs. Nebraska and Minnesota were the first for Penn State since the 2000-01 season when it defeated Illinois (1/31/01) and lost to Indiana (2/3/01).
SERIES VS. NORTHWESTERN
Saturday's game is the first "second" meeting on the Nittany Lions' Big Ten schedule. Penn State and Northwestern played on Friday, January 5, at the Bryce Jordan Center resulting in a 78-63 Penn State victory.
Penn State has never played a game at Allstate Arena. Coach Chambers was on the Villanova staff during the 2005-06 (W, 61-51) and 2007-08 (L, 76-84) seasons when the Wildcats played DePaul in Rosemont.
Overall series: Penn State leads 30-18
at Northwestern: Penn State leads 13-10
at neutral sites: Northwestern leads 2-1
Big Ten games: Penn State leads 30-17
20-POINT TANDEMS
Sophomores Tony Carr and Lamar Stevens had teamed up for four games with each having 20-plus point efforts with two in 2016-17 and two so far in 2017-18
Against Nebraska, Stevens and Mike Watkins added their names and Carr and Watkins paired for another entry on the list of now six Penn State games with two 20-point scorers on the current roster.
