COLLEGE PARK, Pa. - Maryland used a 7-0 run late in the second half and had 18 points from the free throw line in the period to take a 75-69 win over Penn State at the Xfinity Center. Mike Watkins registered his 13th career double-double with 17 points and a career-best 17 rebounds. The redshirt sophomore led three Nittany Lions with double figures as sophomore guard Tony Carr added 16 and sophomore forward Lamar Stevens had 15.
The Nittany Lions led by as many as five points in the second half, but the Terps chipped away at the lead with a combination of field goals and free throws. Maryland tied the game at 61 all then scored twice more for a 65-61 advantage.
Stevens hit a three-pointer to pull Penn State within a point, 65-64. It would be as close as the Nittany Lions would get in the final minutes despite a trey by Reaves with just 23 seconds remaining
"That's a tough pill to swallow because I think we played really good basketball," said coach Patrick Chambers. "Twenty assists, we outrebounded them, made nine threes. We did some really good things. The two statistics we did not win are free throws and the score. We won a lot of stats. Our kids came in here and competed, they played fearless."
Penn State recorded 20 assists on its 29 baskets and committed a season-low six turnovers on the night. The Nittany Lions had 12 offensive rebounds and had 38 total rebounds. Carr and Reaves each contributed three of Penn State's nine three-point field goals. Maryland had the advantage at the free throw line, making 34 trips to only four for Penn State.
Anthony Cowan Jr. had a game-high 18 points and Bruno Fernando scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Kevin Huerter scored all of his 13 points in the second half, including nine points off nine attempts from the charity stripe.
The Terps tied the game at 34 in the first minute of the first half then knotted it up again at 37. A turnaround jumper by Watkins and three-pointer by Carr put the Nittany Lions up by five 42-37, but Maryland countered with a timely three-pointer and field goals by Michal Cekovsky and Joshua Tomaic to hang within one point.
Watkins put Penn State back in the lead two more times with a dunk and jumper in the paint, but Maryland tied the score both times. Back-to-back three-pointers by Nazeer Bostick and Shep Garner extended the lead to four, but the baskets traded over the next minute favored Maryland two to one.
A 9-0 run by the Terps would give them a four-point lead 65-61 with 3:21 remaining. A layup by Watkins cut the lead in half 68-66, but Maryland would add seven more points from the free throw line in the final 88 seconds.
Carr and Reaves combined for 14 of the Nittany Lions' 20 assists and freshman guard Jamari Wheeler had three of the team's four steals. Reaves finished with nine points, all coming on three pointers.
The two teams started the game a combined 0-12 from beyond the arc with Penn State hitting its first three-pointer with 2:15 left before halftime. The Nittany Lions finished the period going 4-5 from the field with three three-pointers, including Reaves' half-ending triple for the 34-30 Penn State lead at the break.
