Zakutney Named B1G Gymnast of the Week

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Sophomore Sam Zakutney earned his second Big Ten Conference honor of the 2018 season as he was named Big Ten Gymnast of the week as announced by the conference office Monday, Jan. 29.

Zakutney notched conference honors for the seventh time in his career as he was a four-time Freshman of the Week honoree and the 2017 Big Ten Freshman of the Year award winner as well as earning Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors twice in 2018.

Furthermore, a Penn State gymnast has earned a conference honor all three weeks of the 2018 season as it has had two freshmen of the week and two gymnasts of the week honors.

Zakutney was the only gymnast to compete on all six events against Illinois, earning his second all-around score of 80-or-higher. The sophomore all-arounder scored an 80.700 to earn his second all-around title of the season, while also taking home the parallel bars title with a 14.450. Zakutney also placed second on the high bar for the Blue and White.

Penn State men's gymnastics will take a week break before heading to Columbus, Ohio Friday, Feb. 9 for a 6 p.m. meet against the Buckeyes.
