UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A three-point night by junior alternate captain Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) wasn't enough as No. 17 Penn State dropped a, 5-3, contest against No. 2 Notre Dame in Big Ten Conference action this evening in front of a raucous crowd at Pegula Ice Arena.
The loss drops the Nittany Lions to 13-12-4 on the year and 6-9-4-2 in the Big Ten while the Irish improve to 21-5-1 overall and 15-2-0-0 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State opened the scoring in the first period as junior Alec Marsh (Bridgewater, N.J.) fired a shot from the right circle off a clean face-off win by classmate Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) and the puck found its way past the glove of Irish goaltender Cale Morris for the 1-0 edge.
- The Nittany Lions nearly extended their lead just over a minute later as sophomore Brandon Biro (Sherwood Park, Alb.) punched in a rebound, but the goal was reviewed and called off due to the puck being played with a hand before it reached Biro's stick.
- PSU eventually extended the lead to a pair near the end of the first period as Berger fired an absolute laser over the glove of Morris from the right circle off another clean face-off win by Sturtz for the 2-0 lead at 17:18.
- Andrew Oglevie cut the Irish deficit in half as he ripped home a one timer off a nice cross-ice feed from Dennis Gilbert for the 2-1 score at 4:00 of the second period.
- Then just 2:48 later Notre Dame took advantage of the power-play to tie the contest as Andrew Peeke sent one through traffic from the right point that trickled past Penn State net-minder Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) for the 2-2 score at 6:48 of the middle frame.
- Penn State came right back as it was Berger again notching his second of the night as he redirected a shot from senior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) up and over the left shoulder of Morris for the 3-2 lead at 9:01.
- The Irish answered again during an odd-man rush, Joe Wegwerth fed Bo Brauer and he hit a yawning net as Jones was out of the crease for the 3-3 tie at 17:13 of the second period.
- Brauer then gave the Irish their first lead of the game as he finished off a great feed from behind the net by Bobby Nardella for the 4-3 lead at 4:21 of the third period.
- Dawson Cook extended the Notre Dame lead to 5-3 as his shot from the left dot trickled through Jones at 11:58 of the third period.
GOALTENDING
Jones falls to 12-10-3 on the year after making 32 saves while Morris improves to 20-3-0 after an eye-popping 48 save performance.
NOTES
- Penn State fired 50-plus shots on net for the fourth time this season as they held the 51-37 advantage in shots, but went 0-for-2 with the man-advantage while Notre Dame capitalized on its lone power-play going 1-for-1.
- Sturtz secured his team-leading 11th multi-point game of the season and the 29th of his career. With his three assists Sturtz moves past Dylan Richard '17 for third on the Penn State all-time assists list with 47. His 23 assists this year also tie Berger for the fifth most in a single-season.
- Sturtz's 34 points and 23 assists are both good for second in the Big Ten and tied for ninth and sixth in the nation, respectively.
- Berger secures his sixth career two-goal game and the 15th multi-point game of his career, his fourth this season.
- Trevor Hamilton snaps a five-game pointless streak as he notched an assist on Berger's second goal giving him 19 on the season to lead all Big Ten defensemen.
- Tonight's crowd of 6,229 was the second largest ever at Pegula Ice Arena, only trailing the 6,370 from opening night against Army in 2013.
