UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team will travel to Richmond, Va. this weekend to take on VCU and James Madison in a double header. The Lions will face VCU Sunday, Feb. 25, at 10 a.m. and James Madison at 1 p.m.
The Nittany Lions (3-4) are coming off two close losses to Memphis and Cornell. VCU (6-2) is coming off a tough loss but will look for redemption when they play George Washington Saturday, Feb. 24 before facing Penn State on Sunday. James Madison is 6-1 on the season and will take on George Mason Friday, Feb. 23 before playing the Nittany Lions.
"We have another tough road trip this weekend," said head coach Jeff Zinn. "We are always challenged by a VCU program that takes pride in its tennis program and NCAA appearances. They have had a great start to this season and are very tough at home. We finish the road trip with a match against James Madison. They also have had a good start to their season and it will be a very challenging match with JMU. We have had two weeks to regroup and work on our games. Hopefully the time away from competition has helped us and we can play at our best."
"This weekend is crucial for our season," said associate head coach Paul Tobin. "We can't take any teams lightly and both VCU and JMU are well coached. The guys just have to play to their potential and we should be fine. We have been working hard on our doubles because we will need that point."
Looking ahead, the team will start Big Ten play against Ohio State Wednesday, Feb. 28 in Columbus.
