NEWARK, N.J. - No. 10 Penn State swept NJIT on the road Friday night at the Wellness and Events Center (25-21, 25-17, 25-15) to improve to 5-1 in conference play and earned the 10th win of the season.
Penn State earned its 10th win of the season behind a stout defense, limiting the Highlanders to a match hitting percentage of .129 as well as holding NJIT to .120 hitting in the opening set and a dismal .000 to close out that match in the third set.
The Nittany Lions on the other hand, never hit less than .333 in any of the three sets while recording a second set hitting percentage of .571 in which Penn State posted the most kills of any set between either team with 13.
Calvin Mende led the way for Penn State with his nine kills that were a game-high while also adding four blocks on the defensive end. Penn State gave NJIT fits from the service line as the Lions put eight service aces on the Highlanders with Aidan Albrecht contributing three of his own.
Penn State improves to 41-1 all-time vs. NJIT and will have a chance to add to that all-time series when the Highlanders travel to University Park, Pa. on Apr. 14.
Penn State continues EIVA conference play tomorrow Mar. 3 as the Nittany Lions travel to Princeton to take on the Tigers at 7 p.m. ET.
