INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA announced on Monday, March 26, the participants for the 2018 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Regional Championships and the No. 29 Penn State women's gymnastics team found out the other five teams that will join PSU on April 7 inside historic Rec Hall.
"I'm really excited to host an NCAA Regional," head coach Sarah Brown said. "The staff at Rec Hall has been great all year running our meets, so I know the upcoming regional will be no different. On behalf of Penn State, we are looking forward to welcome teams from across the country to Happy Valley for the meet on April 7!"
The No. 29 Nittany Lions will host No. 5 Florida, No. 8 Washington, No. 17 Arizona State, No. 27 West Virginia and No. 30 New Hampshire, with the top two teams earning a berth into the NCAA Championship field on April 20-21 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Six teams, five all-around competitors - who did not qualify with a team - and one individual event specialist per event were named to each of the six predetermined host sites.
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors who are not on an advancing team from each regional site will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. The top two teams from the Columbus, Raleigh and Tuscaloosa regionals will compete in the first semifinal, and the top two teams from the Minneapolis, Salt Lake City and University Park regionals will compete in the second semifinal.
In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.
Penn State will host an NCAA Regional for the 14th time in school history in 2018 and the first time since 2014. Penn State has competed every year in the regional format since its inception in 1982.
