IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Penn State men's gymnastics team placed second in a tri-meet at Iowa, finishing second to the Hawkeyes, while beating Arizona State with a score of 396.550 on Saturday, March 3.
Iowa earned the win at the tri-meet with a 404.050, while Penn State placed second with a 396.500 and Arizona State placed third with a 376.150.
The Nittany Lions won half the individual event titles on the day as Noah Roberson (Williamsville, N.Y.) won the still rings title, Chris Sands (Lancaster, Pa.) picked up the floor title and Wyatt Tyndall (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) earned the parallel bars win.
The Nittany Lions started on the pommel horse in the tri-meet, scoring a 64.500 with sophomore Stephen Nedoroscik (Worcester, Mass.) leading the team tying for fourth overall with a 13.200, while Jack Baldwin (Mexico, N.Y.) placed sixth for the Blue and White.
Moving to the still rings, Penn State earned its first event victory of the day as Roberson picked up the win with 14.350, while junior Greg Tamargo (Kennett Square, Pa.) tied for second with a 14.150. Sands rounded out the top three scorers for the Nittany Lions, finishing in a tie for fifth with a 13.750.
Sands notched his second win in as many weeks picking up the event victory on the floor exercise with a 14.300, while freshman Brennan Pantazis (Sparks, Nev.) tied for second with a 13.900. The Blue and White scored a 65.600 on the floor as it continued to trail Iowa after three rotations.
Penn State notched its third-straight win of the night when Tyndall paced the field on the parallel bars with a 14.200. Alex Thomason placed second for the Nittany Lions and fifth overall with a 13.800, while freshman Alex Frack (Nazareth, Pa.) came in sixth overall with a 13.700 on the parallel bars. As a team, the Blue and White scored a 68.250.
The Nittany Lions struggled on the high bars, scoring a 59.900 with Burns placing fourth overall with a 13.100. Tyndall tied for seventh overall and came in second for the Blue and White with a 12.750.
With one rotation to go, Penn State sat in second behind the Hawkeyes. Joshua Smith (Baton Rouge, La.) led the Nittany Lions on the vault, placing second overall with a 14.600, while Brayden Borromeo (Littlestown, Pa.) tied for third with a 14.150.
Penn State was unable to overcome the early deficit against the Hawkeyes, placing second in the away tri-meet.
The Blue and White will be back in action Saturday, March 10 when it travels to Arizona State for the second-straight meeting between the two squads at 9 p.m.
