UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" Purdue broke open a pitchers' duel in the fifth inning, going on to defeat Penn State, 9-0, in the second game of a Big Ten baseball doubleheader Saturday in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Purdue (14-10, 3-0 Big Ten) won the first game of the day, 6-3, and swept Penn State (7-15, 1-5 Big Ten) in the three game series.
The Boilermakers' pitching staff combined for three hits allowed in the second game, led by starter RHP Trent Johnson (1-1), who worked five innings, allowing one hit and walking three while striking out six. RHP Cameron Williams stuck out four in 2 2/23 innings, allowing just two hits, and LHP Matt Moore worked the final 1 1/3, striking out one and walking three.
The game was a pitchers' duel through the first four innings, as Johnson yielded just four base runners and LHP Dante Biasi (Hazle Township, Pa.) (1-3) did the same but picked off three of them. However, Biasi ran into trouble in the fifth, loading the bases two walks and a single with one out. RHP Eric Mock (Dillsburg, Pa.) came on to replace him, but all three base runners eventually scored on a walk, wild pitch and RBI-single by shortstop Harry Shipley, respectively.
Left fielder Alec Olund added an RBI-single in the sixth for a 5-0 lead, and an RBI-groundout by first baseman Jacson McGowan made it 6-0 in the seventh. Purdue added three runs in the ninth for the final margin.
Shipley and McGowan drove in two runs each to lead in RBIs, while designated hitter Charlie Nasuti went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Second baseman Conlin Hughes broke up Johnson's no-hit bid in the fifth, taking advantage of the wind on a double to shallow center field. Logan Goodnight pinch-hit in the eighth and singled to left, and center fielder Jordan Bowersox (Winter Springs, Fla.) beat out an infield single in the frame for the Lions' lone hits.
Penn State continues its homestand Tuesday against West Virginia and Wednesday against St. Bonaventure, with both games starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday's game will also be televised nationally on BTN.
