BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Penn State softball team fell in an 8-0 decision in five innings at the University of Indiana Sunday, April 22.
The Nittany Lions drew two walks in the contest, while Madison Shaffer (New Castle, Pa.) took the loss in the contest, throwing 2.2 innings.
Gabbi Jenkins was 3-for-3 at the plate for Indiana, while Maddie Westmoreland went 2-for-3 with four RBI on the day. Tara Trainer earned the victory, throwing all five innings with six strikeouts.
Indiana opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, putting runners on first and third before a single up the middle plated both baserunners to give the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead. IU continued to build on its advantage in the bottom of the first inning, tacking on one final run in the opening frame.
Penn State put a runner on base in the top of the fourth inning on a walk and advanced her to second but was unable to plate the run heading into the bottom half of the inning trailing 3-0.
The Hoosiers added five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 8-0 lead over the Blue and White. Penn State could not generate any offense in the top of the fifth, taking the 8-0 setback.
