CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The 19th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions will travel to Virginia to battle the No. 6 Cavaliers in a non-conference match-up on Friday evening.

ABOUT THE MATCHUP

  • This marks the 40th meeting between the two schools in the all-time series with Virginia holding the 21-18 advantage including a 17-5 mark since 1997. However, Penn State has won two of the last three meetings including a 12-8 victory last season in Happy Valley.
  • The series dates back to 1983 and the teams have met at least once each season since that inaugural meeting where Penn State secured the 16-8 victory. Penn State won the first 10 meetings, but have only eight wins in the series since 1991.
  • Senior Katie O'Donnell has registered 10 career goals against Virginia while adding three assists for 13 points in four career games registering multi-goal games in three of those four contests.

SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Virginia is coming off a 15-8 setback at Maryland on Wednesday and have now lost two straight games and sit at 8-4 overall and are ranked No. 6 in the nation. The Cavaliers finished the 2017 season at 12-9 bowing out to UNV in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Cavaliers are paced by three goal scorers with over 30 goals as Avery Shoemaker leads the team with 34 goals followed by Kasey Behr and Sammy Mueller with 32 and 31, respectively. Maggie Jackson has chipped in with 23 goals and a team-high 15 assists while Ana Hagerup has added 12 goals.
  • Rachel Vander Kolk has started all 12 games between the pipes for Virginia posting an 8-3 record with a 10.95 goals against average and a 3.43 save percentage.
  • As a team Virginia has just 69 saves and a .347 save percentage over the first 12 games this season to rank 105th out of 115 Division I teams.
  • Virginia averages 14.42 goals per game and 19.27 groundballs per game.

FAST START

  • Penn State has jumped out to early leads often this season and have lead at halftime in 10 of 12 games posting an 8-2 record in those contests.
  • The Nittany Lions are outscoring their opponents 108-70 in the first half this season. Penn State's goal differential of 38 in the first half is second in the Big Ten only behind the 59 of Maryland who is outscoring opponents 110-51 over the opening 30 minutes.
  • Even though Penn State has lead at the half in 10 games this season they have only scored the first goal of a game in 6-of-12 games holding records of 4-2 when scoring the first goal and also when allowing the first goal.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

  • Penn State will be playing in its seventh road game of the 2018 season on Friday and after a slow start on the road going 1-2 the Nittany Lions are 3-0 in their last three road games.

  • Junior Kayla Brisolari ranks second on the team with 43 draws on the season.

200-POINT CLUB
