STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Penn State Nittany Lions are making their seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and will battle the Penn Quakers in a first-round match-up on Friday evening at 5 p.m.

THIS WEEK'S MATCHUP

  • This marks just the second meeting between the two schools in the last decade and each one will have been an NCAA Tournament game.
  • Penn State leads the all-time series 10-6 including an 8-4 victory in the 2016 NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals. However, prior to the latest Nittany Lion victory, the Quakers had won the previous four meetings.
  • Only six current Nittany Lions have game experience against Penn with Madison Carter leading the way with two goals while Kelly Daggett and Maggie Gallagher have each scored once against the Quakers.

SCOUTING THE QUAKERS

  • Penn is coming off a 13-10 setback to Princeton in the IVY league championship game last Sunday and currently sit at 13-4 on the year and are ranked 14th in the latest IWLCA Poll.
  • Penn has six players with 20 or more goals this season led by Erin Barry and Gabby Rosenzweig with 48 and 47 goals, respectively.
  • The Quakers also lead the Ivy League with 143 assists averaging 8.41 helpers per game to rank fifth nationally as Rosenzweig along with Emily Rogers-Healion and Zoe Belodeau have each registered more than 30 assists this season.
  • Penn is averaging 14.18 goals per game while allowing 10.53 to rank in the middle of the pack of the Ivy League in both categories.
  • Penn's .433 shooting percentage and .482 save percentage rank fourth and second in the Ivy League, respectively.
  • Mikaila Cheeseman has appeared in all 17 games this season with 14 starts posting an 11-4 record with a 10.83 goals against average and a .467 save percentage. Maggie Smith has a 2-0 record with an 8.22 goals against average and a .486 save percentage.

SEVENTH HEAVEN

  • Penn State is making its seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance and the 24th in program history. The Nittany Lions are 23-21 all-time in NCAA Tournament games including an 8-8 mark in First Round matchups.
  • Penn State is 7-3 in the NCAA Tournament over the past two season's including back-to-back trips to the Final Four in 2016 and 2017.
  • Senior Katie O'Donnell leads the team with 26 goals and four assists for 30 points in 10 career NCAA Tournament games while junior Madison Carter has scored 18 goals with a pair of assists for 20 points in seven NCAA Tournament games and senior Maggie Gallagher has added seven goals in nine NCAA Tournament games.
  • Sophomore Maria Auth had her coming out party during last season's NCAA Tournament registering nearly half her season total for goals in the three games scoring eight while adding three assists for 11 points.

THE B1G THREE

  • Sophomore Maria Auth registered a career-high eight points with three goals and a career-best five assists last Friday night against Northwestern adding a pair of goals and one assist in the B1G Championship against Maryland for a total of 11 points over the weekend.
  • Carter tied her career-high with six goals on Friday night before adding four against Maryland for a total of ten goals in the two games to lead the team while O'Donnell chipped in four goals over the weekend.
  • The trio ranks in the top-5 of the Big Ten in goals scored this season as Carter ranks second with 57 while O'Donnell and Auth rank third and fifth, respectively with 56 and 52 goals scored. Auth's 68 total points rank fourth in the Big Ten. The sophomore is also just two points shy of 100 for her career.
  • O'Donnell has moved all the way up to sixth on the Penn State all-time scoring list with 222 points in 82 games while her 198 career goals are also good for sixth among active players across the nation and she is just two goals shy of becoming only the fourth player in program history to reach 200 career goals.
  • O'Donnell has only been held without a goal five times in her career.
  • Carter has 15 multi-goal games this season and has moved into fifth on the Penn State all-time goals list with 175 for her career to rank 14th among active players and second in the junior class behind BC's Sam Apuzzo. Carter is also just eight points shy of becoming the 15th member of the 200-point club at Penn State.

TWO-WAY DAGGETT

  • After moving to defense earlier this season to fill a team need, junior Kelly Daggett returned to offense in spurts this past weekend scoring a goal while adding a pair of assists.
  • Daggett remains the team leader in caused turnovers with 25 while her 30 groundballs are good for second on the team.
  • Daggett joined Carter, O'Donnell and Auth on the All-Tournament team following the Big Ten Tournament.

OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER

  • Penn State has three 50 goal scorers in a single-season for the first time in at least the past two decades and is just 14 goals shy of tying the program record for most goals in a season of 303 set just last year.
  • However, the Nittany Lions have given up the most goals in a single-season in program history allowing 253 goals so far this season passing the previous record of 240 allowed during the 2013 season.
  • Penn State is also just 39 points shy of setting a new single-season points record in back-to-back seasons. The current record is 427 set in 2017.
