COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Penn State men's golf team completed the opening round at the Columbus NCAA Regional on Monday with a team score of 9-over at Ohio State Golf Club to finish the round in fifth place among the 13 teams in the field.
The Nittany Lions were led by junior JD Hughes (Carlisle, Pa.) who carded an opening round of even-par 71 to share eighth place among individuals.
Junior Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) played his final seven holes at 1-under-par to finish the day with a 2-over 73. The Georgia native is tied for 18th individually.
Last year's Washington Regional champion, senior Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.), played the opening round at 3-over to sit in a tie for 27th individually with a 74.
Sophomore Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) battled back after a difficult opening nine holes to play the second nine at even-par and finish tied for 30th after round one with a 4-over 75.
The region's No. 1 seed, Oklahoma State, is the current team leader after a team score of 3-under-par on Monday. The individual leader is Illinois' Michael Feagles who opened the regional with a 3-under 68.
Round two will begin teeing off on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. on the 7,455-yard, par 71 Scarlet Course. Live scoring is available here.
