DES MOINES, Iowa - Isaiah Harris (Lewiston, Maine) of Nike brought home silver in the men's 800-meter run on the final day of the USATF Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium.
Harris, a junior at Penn State, signed with Nike over the weekend and will forgo his final year of collegiate eligibility. On Sunday, Harris crossed the finish line in 1:47.11 to record back-to-back second-place finishes at the USATF Outdoor Championships.
"I think I made a few tactical and positioning mistakes in the race, but overall I'm happy to walk away with a silver medal," Harris said. "Clayton [Murphy] is such a good competitor and is a Olympic medalist in the 800m for a reason. However, I am already looking forward to my next few races and I'm ready to run a PR."
Making her debut at the USATF Championships, junior Maddie Holmberg (Greensburg, Pa.) finished ninth in the heptathlon with her score of 5,780 points. She began the day with a distance of 19-2 in the long jump to tally 801 points. In the long jump field, Holmberg tallied the fifth-best mark on the day.
Following the long jump, Holmberg posted a distance of 131-3 in the javelin throw to score 667 points. She then closed out the heptathlon with a time of 2:19.23 in the 800-meter run to tally 834 points.
"My whole objective was to come in, have fun, and just enjoy the opportunity," Holmberg said. "My day one went pretty well and day two didn't go exactly as I hoped. I still think that I learned a lot through this process and this experience."
Penn State alumna Rachel Fatherly (Williamsport, Pa.) of Velaasa placed eighth in the women's shot put with her distance of 58-3.75.
