Nye Honored as NE Region MGOLF Coach of Year

June 6, 2018

STILWATER, Okla. - Penn State men's golf coach Greg Nye has been selected the Golf Pride Grips Northeast Region Coach of the Year, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA) today. It is the 11th such honor for Nye during his tenure as the Nittany Lion head coach and third in as many years.

In 10 tournaments during the 2017-18 season, Penn State recorded nine top-five finishes, including winning team titles at the Windon Memorial in Chicago, the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, and Rutherford Intercollegiate, as well as capturing a fourth-place team finish in the Big Ten Championships.

"Our program would not be nearly as successful if we weren't surrounded and supported by our administration, my colleagues, our alumni and families," Nye said. "This honor represents so many people who have helped our program achieve both this year and in years past. I'd especially like to thank T.J. Howe, our assistant coach, who has been a tremendous asset in his first season back with our program. Huge credit and thanks go to our talented student-athletes who consistently perform at a high level week in and week out."

Nye previously was selected as the GCAA Region Coach of the Year in 1993, 1994, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2016 and 2017.

The Nittany Lions made their fourth-straight appearance in an NCAA Regional in 2018, and Penn State is one of only four Big Ten Conferenceteams to accomplish that feat. Under Nye's guidance, the Nittany Lions have done it twice, with consecutive trips in 2015-2018 and previously in 2007-2010.

For the fourth-straight year, Penn State led all schools in the Northeast Region with its four All-Region selections including Cole Miller, a four-time honoree. Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) earned accolades in the Northeast Region three times and for the second-straight year, JD Hughes and Ryan Davis were selected to the All-Region team. The Nittany Lions were tied with Illinois (Midwest Region) for the most honorees among Big Ten institutions with three each.

Four members of Penn State's NCAA regional lineup are slated to return for the 2018-19 season with two rising seniors and two rising juniors.
