Bates and teammate Jake Cooper join the Nittany Lions after helping lead Archbishop Wood to a combined 28-2 overall mark during the past two seasons. Bates was rated as a four-star prospect by all four major recruiting services. ESPN rated Bates as the 13th-best offensive tackle in the class and the 129th overall prospect. ESPN, 247Sports.com and Rivals.com all ranked Bates among the top five prospects in Pennsylvania. Bates participated in the 2015 Under Armour All-American Game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was named PA Football News Lineman of the Year following the 2014 season.
