MIDLAND, Texas—The Penn State women's tennis team completed the first tournament of its fall slate at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational this past weekend. The final day of competition was cut slightly short due to rain, leaving Chelsea Sawyer's (Clemmons, N.C.) last match unfinished.
On the final day of competition, Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) took on competition from Utah State in singles, falling 6-5, 6-1.
Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) went 3-0 on her final day of singles play. Smith first defeated competition from Texas Tech, 6-1, 6-2. She then defeated Autumn Crossnoe of Abilene Christian University, 6-0, 6-5. Smith capped off her day with a win against the University of Alabama Birmingham, 6-3, 6-2.
Sawyer saw her singles match against Texas Tech go unfinished, 6-3, 4-6, 0-2, due to bad weather.
The team went 2-0 in doubles play on the day. O'Gorman and Sawyer defeated Hannah Jones and Alexandra Pisareva of Utah State 8-5. Smith and Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) defeated University of Alabama Birmingham, 8-3.
The weekend as a whole saw the Nittany Lions collect seven singles wins and four doubles wins to open fall play.
Next time out, Penn State will travel in state to the University of Pennsylvania campus to compete in the Cissie Leary Invitational in Philadelphia, from Sept. 21-23.
