Men’s Golf Opens Fall at Rod Myers Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's golf will open the fall portion of its 2018-19 season at the Rod Myers Invitational this weekend, competing Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 8-9 at the Duke University Golf Club course. The 13-team field includes host institution and 18th-ranked Duke, along with two other ranked teams in North Carolina (22) and Florida State (25).

The Nittany Lions make their fourth-straight trip to the Rod Myers Invitational this year, playing a course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., where they earned a top-five team finish a year ago. Penn State's 859 team score for the 54-hole event ranked as one of the top-25 scores in the program's storied history.

This year's 54-hole tournament features 36 holes of play on Saturday with the Nittany Lions teeing off at 7:35 a.m. ET on the 10th hole. Sunday will host the final round on the 7,154-yard, par 72 course. Seniors JD Hughes, Charles Huntzinger and Ryan Dornes, and juniors Alec Bard and Ryan Davis will comprise the starting five for the Nittany Lions this weekend. Huntzinger posted a top-10 finish at this tournament in 2017 and has played well in all three of his appearances. Hughes was among the event's top 15 performers in 2016.

"Qualifying for Duke went exceptionally well," said Nittany Lion men's golf coach Greg Nye. "We got all seven rounds in and the scoring from top to bottom was as good as we have seen. We have four individuals who have a minimum of three starts at the Rod Myers. We have played well here in the past, so familiarity with the tournament course set up should help us."

The Rod Myers Invitational honors the longtime Blue Devil men's head coach who passed away in 2007 after a battle with an acute form of leukemia. The annual intercollegiate tournament has been held at Duke for 45 years and in 2010 was rebranded with Myers' name as a tribute.

The Nittany Lions will practice at the Duke University Golf Club on Friday (Sept. 7) afternoon. A recap will be posted on GoPSUsports.com following the action on both days of competition.
